Enjoy Complete Earth Camp Photo Set Click HERE GOLF CAMP photos HERE Earth Camp is in its final week...and what a week we have planned! Today, August 17th, we finished painting our clay pieces that we created with our professional guest potter from Burti Pottery Studios, went on a fantastic nature hike with guest visitor, Mr. Michael Freidlin, who is a 7th grade teacher at the middle school and recently came back from two trips to Costa Rica and Panama. Also, one of our counselors, Cherise Santoriello, who is going to college to become a teacher of the deaf, taught use how we compensate with our sensories when our vision is taken away, and also taught us some sign language. Tomorrow, August 18th, we will spend the morning at Birchwood Tennis Facility for three hours of professional tennis instruction from Bill Steege and his staff. This is always a great day! To add to that, we will spend the afternoon at the Valley Equestrian 4H Club arena below the middle school. We will enjoy equestrian demonstrations and discussions from two area 4H leaders. Thursday is our grand finale complete with canoeing, fishing, roasting hot dogs over open pit fires, root beer floats, and a huge water balloon bash! This is one of our favorite days with our campers - please feel free to join in on the fun! Thank you to all of our special guests: Darin Huggler, Michael Freidlin, Rob Smith, Joe Dorohovech, Clay LaCoe, Margaret Maurer, Paul Flynn, and Alex Hargrove. A special thank you to all the parents who contributed by donating their time, money, and other necessities to help make Earth Camp a success! Also, Earth Camp could not be a reality without the financial support of the following organizations: AEIO & You, Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, and Pennsylvania American Water. |

The new Park Pavilion is up and available for you to reserve for a family or civic function. Click here to download the reservation form and return it to Clarks Summit Borough Building with a $75 deposit. STOP & GO -- Much to everyone's relief the new restroom facility was delivered and installed as scheduled on April 21st. The unit is solid concrete, but looks like a more rustic building. It was manufactured in Texas and traveled across the country to fit perfectly into the excavation prepared by the Glenburn DPW crew and Supervisor Bill Wicks. Even before the crane was out of the parking lot families came running off the Boundless Playground to break in the new watering hole. |

Walk the Lake’s proposed ADA-accessible scenic walking trail surrounding Eston Wilson Lake will enhance the Abington Area Community Park as a destination for environmental education, recreation and fitness for visitors of all physical abilities. Currently, only the able-bodied have access to the water’s edge of the lake, and there is no defined path to encourage full lake access.

Take the first step towards adventure by realizing that you can create it. Scouting is more than just fun and games. It's a family centered program that builds character and good citizenship. Let me see –Scouting offers camping, rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, canoeing, summer camp. Trips to Gettysburg, Rhode Island , Washington DC , New Mexico…” Gary Katz, BSA Troop160 Scoutmaster “Troop 160 has been working closely with the AAJRB for some time now. The PA Fish & Boat Commission stocked Eston Wilson Lake with more than 1500 rainbow trout for the 2009 fishing season. In addition to trout there are bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish in the lake. Remember that anglers 16 and older need a PA fishing license with a Trout Stamp to fish in the Lake. You can purchase a license at Dick's Sporting Goods or at any K-Mart.
For more info about trout fishing click this link to the PA Fish & Boat site. Locally, bait and tackle is available at Pete's Bait just south of Chapman Supply in the 'notch' on Rt. 6. Pete is a helpful guy and has spent his life encouraging kids to fish with their families! The water quality at Eston Wilson Lake is tested and treated to control algae during the fishing season by Eco-Scientific Solutions, under contract to the abington Area Joint Recreation Board. See the latest water quality reports by clicking here. Please remember to collect any bait containers and all trash within reach and toss in the garbage cans around the park. Fish bite best for neat anglers! |

Lackawanna County's grant program for local parks will add $45,000 to the funds available to improve Abington Community. A variety of state and local grants total more than $500,000 that will greatly improve Abington Community Park in the next 18 months. Senator Bob Mellow secured a $30,000 grant and State Rep. Jim Wanzsac secured 3 grants worth $39,000. Those funds were used as the local match to help secure the county funds. Announced in February was a $200,000 grant from casio funds raised in Monroe County. See the Casino Grant Announcement here. Lackawanna County Commissioners Corey O'Brien, Mike Washo and AJ Munchak also announced in February that the County will build a $250,000 Boundless Playground in the Abington Area Community Park. These funds will be combined to build a pavillion and support facilities for the Playground, and revamp the 'international soccer field' at the park. Abington Youth Soccer will donate an additional $60,000 toward the soccer field upgrade. The AAJRB is continuing to research and apply for additional state, local and foundation grants. Recently the IRS reviewed the AAJRB and confirmed that its is a 501-c-3 organization, meaning that contributions are fully deductible for tax purposes. The PA Dept. of Education recently approved the AAJRB's Earth Camp as an educational project eligible to receive incentive funding. |

The Abington Township Supervisors made local history of sorts by becoming the first local municipality to pledge non-member funding to the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board. That's great news! We have been informed that South Abington Township, Glenburn Township, Clarks Summit and Clarks Green Borough also approved our funding request from member municipalities. |
